Embrace Integrity
It looks like the natural diamond industry has no choice but to think of creating a level playing field with the synthetic diamond industry. The possibility to coexist without interfering in each other’s domain is perhaps looked at as an option. The China Diamond Exchange has already signed an agreement with the stakeholders to promote synthetic diamonds.

In 2015, the members of the BDB voted in favour of banning synthetics from the premises; this also happened in light of passing off synthetic diamonds as naturals. Cut to three years and BDB may consider lifting the ban on synthetics in the next six months. Many dealers of synthetic diamonds have approached the committee requesting them to permit doing synthetic diamond business in BDB.

We don’t know anything for sure as of yet but if this actually comes into play, as an industry, we need to embrace integrity and ensure that consumers are told the whole truth and nothing but the truth. In the meanwhile, we must also do what we are supposed to do – promote diamonds to the end consumer. Speaking of which, the DPA’s Birth of a Child campaign that was launched yesterday appeals to the young couples – if a new mother doesn’t deserve something as precious as a diamond then who else does?
